Starting Summer!

Saturday, May 27th, 2006

…Yes, me and my kids came back inside the house around 7pm.  We’ve been swimming in our 4-5ft deep pool. Some of the neiborhood kids wanted to join too, making sure that they know how-to follow my rules especially when having toddlers around so, they agreed with me!, with these kids and myself, it was a total of 7 that I have to keep an eye on.  I would’ve never guessed how 3 hours of swimming can make you go so hungry!…good thing Alex had bbQ’d and I have a bowl full of potato salad in the fridge.  I’m happy for this weekend off, I’ll make the best of it because, it might be the only weekend off for me for next month of June…i dont know, my schudule is a little screwed but, it still gives me the standard 40 hrs. or so a week.  After this, I would like to use up some of paid vacations in July, reason why I’m doing this so we could take family vacations not just one, I haven’t forgotten about my in-laws’ "Family Reunion" this July, hopefully I would get an exact date by the 15th of June.  Recalling my past blogs, I know I’ve mentioned about this event last year, it wiill be in Houston, Texas.  Six Flags Astroworld closed down for some reason I don’t know.  At least Six Flags : Splashtown   is still around and I think its better because not only it has the rollercoasters, its also a waterpark.

We might revisit Galveston, I know I have been a real skeptic about going there but, when we did went, I didn’t want to leave!  I felt bad that we didn’t get to stay long.  (I have updated this blog, I just now finished this today of the 29th of May 2006).

Helping Overweight Children

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

Children become overweight for a variety of reasons. The most common causes are genetic factors, lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating patterns, or a combination of these factors. In rare cases, a medical problem, such as an endocrine disorder, may cause a child to become overweight. Your physician can perform a careful physical exam and some blood tests, if necessary, to rule out this type of problem.

Genetic Factors:

Children whose parents or brothers or sisters are overweight may be at an increased risk of becoming overweight themselves. Although weight problems run in families, not all children with a family history of obesity will be overweight. Genetic factors play a role in increasing the likelihood that a child will be overweight, but shared family behaviors such as eating and activity habits also influence body weight.

Lifestyle:

A child’s total diet and his or her activity level both play an important role in determining a child’s weight. The increasing popularity of television and computer and video games contributes to children’s inactive lifestyles. The average American child spends approximately 24 hours each week watching television-time that could be spent in some sort of physical activity.

If you think that your child is overweight, it is important to talk with your child’s doctor. A doctor is the best person to determine whether your child has a weight problem. Physicians will measure your child’s weight and height to determine if your child’s weight is within a healthy range. A physician will also consider your child’s age and growth patterns to determine whether your child is overweight. Assessing overweight in children is difficult because children grow in unpredictable spurts.

For example, it is normal for boys to have a growth spurt in weight and catch up in height later. It is best to let your child’s doctor determine whether your child will "grow into" a normal weight. If your doctor finds that your child is overweight, he or she may ask you to make some changes in your family’s eating and activity habits.

Be Supportive.

One of the most important things you can do to help overweight children is to let them know that they are okay whatever their weight. Children’s feelings about themselves often are based on their parents’ feelings about them. If you accept your children at any weight, they will be more likely to accept and feel good about themselves. It is also important to talk to your children about weight, allowing them to share their concerns with you. Your child probably knows better than anyone else that he or she has a weight problem. For this reason, overweight children need support, acceptance, and encouragement from their parents.

Focus on the family.

Parents should try not to set children apart because of their weight, but focus on gradually changing their family’s physical activity and eating habits. Family involvement helps to teach everyone healthful habits and does not single out the overweight child.

Increase your family’s physical activity.

Regular physical activity, combined with healthy eating habits, is the most efficient and healthful way to control your weight. It is also an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Some simple ways to increase your family’s physical activity include the following:

  • Be a role model for your children. If your children see that you are physically active and have fun, they are more likely to be active and stay active for the rest of their lives.
  • Plan family activities that provide everyone with exercise and enjoyment, like walking, dancing, biking, or swimming. For example, schedule a walk with your family after dinner instead of watching TV. Make sure that you plan activities that can be done in a safe environment.
  • Be sensitive to your child’s needs. Overweight children may feel uncomfortable about participating in certain activities. It is important to help your child find physical activities that they enjoy and that aren’t embarrassing or too difficult.
  • Reduce the amount of time you and your family spend in sedentary activities, such as watching TV or playing video games.
  • Become more active throughout your day and encourage your family to do so as well. For example, walk up the stairs instead of taking the elevator, or do some activity during a work or school break-get up and stretch or walk around.

The point is not to make physical activity an unwelcome chore, but to make the most of the opportunities you and your family have to be active.

Teach your family healthy eating habits.

Teaching healthy eating practices early will help children approach eating with the right attitude-that food should be enjoyed and is necessary for growth, development, and for energy to keep the body running. The best way to begin is to learn more about children’s nutritional needs by reading or talking with a health professional and then to offer them some healthy options, allowing your children to choose what and how much they eat. The pamphlet "Dietary Guidelines for Americans" is a good source of dietary advice for healthy Americans ages 2 years and older. This pamphlet is available from WIN.

Don’t place your child on a restrictive diet.

Children should never be placed on a restrictive diet to lose weight, unless a doctor supervises one for medical reasons. Limiting what children eat may be harmful to their health and interfere with their growth and development.

  • Most of the foods in your diet should come from the grain products group (6-11 servings), the vegetable group (3-5 servings), and the fruit group (2-4 servings). (See chart for suggested serving sizes.)
  • Your diet should include moderate amounts of foods from the milk group (2-3 servings) and the meat and beans group (2-3 servings).
  • Foods that provide few nutrients and are high in fat and sugars should be used sparingly. Fat should not be restricted in the diets of children younger than 2 years of age.

Gardening 101

Thursday, May 18th, 2006

A few days ago, I’ve started a new hobby…making a garden.  I already have a few pots and gardening tools in the house and I would definitely need some "How-to" ideas on HGTV - Home Gardening Television. Hey, I’m new at this and besides, our front lawn needs some "tlc" instead of plain grass.  Gardening became one of my priorities when it comes to "outdoor" improvements.  Oftentimes when I ride my car to go to the store, I couldn’t help but glimpse on how our nearby neighbors’ lawns filled with "professional-like" bloomed flowers, I know its bad to envy but, I felt like it because its so beautiful! and I’m thinking to myself, I wanted that kind of lawn of my own!…geez.Bluebonnets_3   Our  Texas Hill Country (located west of Austin, TX) has lots of wildflowers such as the state flower–BluebonnetsBluebonnet_d_1 , unfortunately I don’t live nearby.

Anyways, back to my gardening situation, Alex had helped me do some shoveling because, there were too many rocks and those darn weeds!, I saved this topic from the site above which is very helpful:

Starting a Garden

Any time is a good time to start a garden as long as the ground isn’t frozen solid or soaking wet. For many new to gardening, starting small is the preferred choice. Bugs, weeds and diseases can often prove to be discouraging. As your confidence and abilities increase, so can the size of your garden!

  • Try to situate your garden in an area that gets at least six hours of sun a day. Typically, that’s going to be a spot that faces either due south or southeast. Your garden also needs to be conveniently placed near the house and a water source. If you have a compost pile, place the garden in close proximity to make it easier to maintain. Keep your garden away from mature trees that could invade your soil with their roots. Underground utility lines should also be avoided for this reason.

  • Another important consideration is providing air circulation for your garden. Avoid keeping plants beside solid walls or fences. This will reduce the likelihood of fungal diseases attacking your plants.

  • To mark the perimeter of your garden, use a string attached to stakes, or use a garden hose. To keep grass from growing into the garden, use a border–plastic, metal, wood, stone or even a plain trench will serve this purpose.

  • Most likely, your garden will be covered with turfgrass. Do not till this grass into the soil as it will only produce thousands of tiny sprigs that will sprout again. Remove the sod with a shovel to a depth of about four inches and cart from the garden. Replace this sod with a mixture of leaves and compost to a depth of three or four inches. Water this area well for a week or two. If you see any weeds pop up, a slight tug will solve the problem. The sod you removed can be used to cover bare spots in the yard or can be stacked upside down and in layers to turn to compost later. If clay or rock is a problem in your garden, you can construct a frame on top of the ground for planting–be sure to use rot-resistant lumber! Once filled with organic matter, it’s ready to plant.

Aristotle_2_1

Ok, I don’t speak like this or I don’t write like this unless I’m making a research paper or thesis or something…I speak like when you see me in person just as I’m writing and you’re reading this right now.  I like to say what i want to say of course considering it doesn’t give anyone any hard feelings or feeling awkward being around me, likewise talking to me.  Above by the way is you know, Aristotle’s philosophy of Logic….wtf?  lol anyways, I acknowledge his works.

It’s about an hour before going to work…me and my kids are really making good progress with our mini-garden at our front porch.  I’m thinking of sunflowers and some wildflowers around it…hmmm.  I already have several potted plants soon-to-be blooming in a week or two…beginning of summer is next week, i believe….and I’d like to get into beautifying our backyard when i have more time to do it or if i don’t get lazy…yes folks, we all do get lazy….lol ooops almost time to go….i feel like i wrote a haiku…lol …notice my writing?…lol

How I feel…Poems

*Nicholas Gordon*

Joy is in the simple things: touching,
Embracing, chattering on for hours about nothing,
Sure of your place within another’s heart.
Simple things: like coming home knowing
Exactly where the treasure lies; like being
At ease with what you do and who you are;
Needing what you already have; accepting,
Desiring what you have been given; feeling
The gratitude of someone who is loved;
Investing goodness instead of money; giving
For the pleasure of giving pleasure; seeing
Fortune come to take you in its arms.
All this joy is yours for the price of loving,
Not only well but long, days of willing,
Years and years of wise and patient love.

No matter what our troubles, I still love you,
As though a part of me were also you.
Life isn’t easy, but I know without you
There will be bitterness in all I do.
I feel the broken heaven in my heart,
The blight that will outlast the years of healing,
The darkness underneath all time and art,
The pain that from within there’s no concealing.
We were so much in love when we first met,
A river that would reach, in time, the sea.
We ought not let despair turn to regret,
But be through choice what love chose us to be.
No love can last except it be through will.
Were wastelands in our path, I’d love you still.

This one is for me:

Cindy is a girl you ought to see:
Intelligent, intense, and full of life.
Nor will she lose her pertness as a wife,
Devilish, with the patience of a knife,
Yet in her love as rooted as a tree.

Brother’s Bike

Tuesday, May 9th, 2006

My brother Steely sent me an email today about how his new motorcycle looks like and here it is!  he said he’ll send me a real pic next time.  Wow, it looked really awesome…Alex is planning on buying one as long as gas prices continously goes a little more higher! Having a bike is very economical but, I’m not ready to ride it yet…lol.Hyosung_comet_650r_2

Messing with my mind

Sunday, May 7th, 2006

I just talked to my brother today who is still in Columbus, Georgia(army).  My parents had already told me that he bought a brand new motorcycle and I just want to talk to him about it.  He seemed pretty happy and thrilled, passed the written now he’s practicing on the driving part.  I’m a little concerned as a sister, he always have this "Not to your knowledge" quote when i ask him about stuff like have you drank or been speeding?  He does reassure me though that he don’t do smoking and duh! he’s only 18 yrs. old.  As we were talking, he got some clever ways to try to make me join the army.  Beyond the money and the lifetime of security and stuff, sure it sounds good but I don’t think its for me.  I got three little kids to think about and the way things are "politically" it’s not a good time.  Whereas my bro is "gung-ho" for it and surprisingly he said he probably won’t get deployed, you never know.  Right now, me and alex are working on starting our own restaurant, his new little Football league organization is already on the works.  Its best to do something like this as the army is the last resort.  Anyways, ill be praying for him always.
